The Bluffton College Foundation

The Bluffton College Foundation was established in 2024 by supporters of Bluffton College/University including and encouraged by President Jane Wood. The Foundation is an institutionally-related, nonprofit, tax exempt, 501(c)(3) organization and serves as a repository for private gifts to Bluffton College/University that are restricted for operational use on the Bluffton College/University campus.

Gifts can be received through annual giving programs, special campaigns and planned or deferred gifts such as bequests and trusts. Contributions to The Bluffton College Foundation are tax deductible to the extent provided by law.

  • Is The Bluffton College Foundation an endowment?
    • Yes, the new charitable foundation will serve as an endowment. However, its earnings are not restricted to specific programs. The only restriction to this endowment is that the earnings are used for operations on the Bluffton College/University campus. 
  • What is an endowment?
    • Endowments serve institutions by providing stability over time - the principal of the gift is not spent, while endowments generate earnings year after year that can be spent. This spending allocation can provide scholarships for financial aid offers; support the arts and historic traditions; and inspire academic program innovation. Bluffton University currently has a $27 million endowment, but 99 percent of the principal and its earnings are restricted for specific purposes.
  • How is this new charitable foundation different than the Bluffton University endowment?
    • The current Bluffton University endowment will be invested and managed by University of Findlay after the Change of Control phase of the proposed merger. The documented donor intention will be honored by Findlay, but the investment of the principal dollars will be moved from Everence to a financial management service that works with Findlay.
