From trainee to trainer

Josh Webster ’25, an exercise science and strength and conditioning double major from Sidney, Ohio, completed a summer internship at F.A.S.T., a premier athletic training facility in Lima, Ohio. Since completing his internship, Webster has secured a job as a part-time trainer at F.A.S.T.

Through his internship. Webster facilitated group training sessions to elementary and middle school students. Webster was able to offer guidance and motivation and ensure the athletes used proper technique and safety. Through his training, Webster was able to practice injury prevention to help the athletes stay healthy.

“When I was younger, I used to train at F.A.S.T. so it was cool being the one who does the trainings I used to do when I was younger,” said Webster. “When I was completing my internship, I was reminded of how the trainers at F.A.S.T. helped me so I wanted to be that person for the kids I was training.”

Webster came to Bluffton as just an exercise science major. As he began taking classes, Webster realized many of his exercise science classes overlap with the requirements to fulfill the strength and conditioning major, so Webster decided to add a strength and conditioning major to his courseload.

“I wanted to double major so I had more experience. If I want to focus on a particular area, I can use both exercise science and strength and conditioning,” said Webster. “I didn’t want to look back at my time here and wish I would’ve done it. I want to make the most out of my experience.”

Webster says his favorite thing about his classes is the ability to work hands on with the concepts he is learning, which he said significantly helped him during his internship.

“My classes allow me to work hands on with the training techniques we are learning,” said Webster. “When I completed my internship, I remember think ‘I learned this in class,’ so that was really helpful.”

On campus, Webster is a member of the men’s soccer team, Marbeck Activities Council (MAC), co-president of ReviveU and a President’s Ambassador.

“It is important to be active on campus because it allows you to make more connections and have a role in activities that happen on campus,” said Webster. “Being active really helped me come out of my shell from high school and try things I have never done before and make my time here at Bluffton more enjoyable.”

Webster is beginning his final semester at Bluffton. After graduating, Webster plans to attend graduate school to earn his Master of Athletic Training.
