Connecting book learning with hands-on experiences

Alexis Rippel ’27, a biology and chemistry double major from Mansfield, Ohio, completed an internship with Charles River Laboratories during the summer of 2024.

During the internship, Rippel aided in the clinical pathology department where she saw the full clinical process including making blood slides, dissections and necropsy rotations.

“The way Charles River Laboratories does internships is great,” said Rippel. “They rotate you through every department so you gain experience and expertise in each of those departments.”

One of Rippel’s most memorable experiences was in the necropsy department where she was able to conduct canine dissections.

“The dissections were beneficial because I got to see the anatomy and physiology like what I had learned about in my courses at Bluffton,” said Rippel. “My instructor coached me through the entire process and explained the importance of everything I was doing.”

Along with anatomy and physiology, Rippel said that her chemistry course at Bluffton was helpful when she worked in the formulations department.

Rippel said she has always had an interest in medical research due to various family member’s illnesses which sparked her passion to help in the medical research field.

Rippel’s older brother also majored in biology and she learned from his stories that she had a passion for biology as well. Rippel credits Dr. Sarah Lehman assistant professor of biology, for her decision to attend Bluffton to pursue biology.

“During my campus visit, I asked to speak with a science professor,” said Rippel. “We only had a brief conversation but in that time, I came to understand that she genuinely cares about all of her students. She is the true reason I chose Bluffton.”

After graduation, Rippel plans to attend Ohio University to pursue a doctorate degree and continue in the pathology field.
