Jordyn Garmatter

Jordyn Garmatter spent time in Shakespeare's Globe Theatre during her semester abroad.

Fulfilling her cross cultural requirement

Jordyn Garmatter ’26, an English major and theater minor, from Bluffton, Ohio, studied abroad at Queen Mary University of London in London, U.K., during the fall 2024 semester.

During her time in London, Garmatter took English and literature classes, including Shakespeare, Jane Austen and Victorian fiction

“We did mostly group work and wrote essays in my classes,” said Garmatter. “My courses at Bluffton definitely prepared me to handle the course load in London.”

Through the Shakespeare class, Garmatter was able to watch various plays and musicals at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Some of Garmatter’s favorites included “Comedy of Errors,” “Mulan Rouge,” “Phantom of the Opera” and “Wicked.”

Along with viewing productions from the audience, Garmatter also tried her hand on stage by performing in “Legally Blonde: The Musical.”

“We were in a smaller theater with no backstage,” said Garmatter. “There was a lot of dancing, and it was fun overall portraying the role of Margot.”

Garmatter has performed in productions at Bluffton University as well. In her most recent appearance, she played the roles of Lydia Bennett and Anne de Bourgh in Bluffton’s adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice.” Through her Jane Austen class, she visited Chatsworth, where parts of the 2005 film adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” were filmed.

“It was such a full circle moment for me,” said Garmatter. “It is one thing to play the parts in a small production at Bluffton, but to actually be there was a magical experience.

Garmatter came to Bluffton as an English AYA major but decided to focus on just English while picking up a minor in theater.

“I’ve been doing theater for as long as I can remember,” said Garmatter. “Naturally, I had to pick up a theater minor as well.”

After graduation, Garmatter in undecided of an occupation but has hopes to work as a high school librarian.
