Assistant baseball coach/recruiting director

POSITION SUMMARY:  
Reporting to the head baseball coach, this position works as part of an interdependent coaching team that is tasked with the overall management of the Bluffton University baseball team. This position will include assisting in managing all aspects of coaching, eligibility, recruitment, retention, budget, field maintenance and scheduling. The baseball assistant coach is also responsible for assisting the baseball head coach in fundraising for the baseball program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists in the planning and implementation of details in all aspects of the baseball program, including roster construction, practice planning, game preparation and strategy, and administrative tasks related to operations of a collegiate baseball program.
  • In partnership with the enrollment management division and working closely with both the athletics recruiter and the campus visit coordinator, responsible for all aspects of the recruiting process from prospect ID to deposit and enrollment. Must achieve recruiting goals each year.
  • Assist director of athletics with implementation of Virtue Driven Athletics Program.
  • Serve as the lead pitching instructor with oversight of the pitching staff focusing on individual and staff development.
  • Complete annual equipment inventory and assists with the distribution, collection and storage of athletic equipment, uniforms and supplies (during the season and at its conclusion) and the collection of fees for lost equipment and uniforms by student-athletes. 
  • Perform all areas of field maintenance in coordination with the head coach and graduate assistant.
  • Coordinate and oversee academic program for the baseball team/
  • With input from the head coach, implement and execute annual strength and conditioning program.
  • Develop and implement individual instruction and improvement plans.
  • Use technology to analyze and to evaluate skills and determine needed areas of development.
  • Organizes and produces scouting reports/information on opponents in a manner determined by head coach.
  • Completes NCAA and federally mandated initial and ongoing Title IX training, fulfills Title IX reporting expectations and ensures participation of team athletes in all Title IX mandatory trainings.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Actively participates in athletic department functions and meetings, and on university committees as assigned.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with administrative staff, coaches, student-athletes and other staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned which may include teaching, event management, additional facility maintenance and other duties needed in athletic department.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties of this job. 

  • Minimum qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree 
    • Prefer 2 to 4 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level or successful coach experience at the high school level.
    • Special Skills:
      • As a frequent representative of Bluffton University to the public and corporate community, the employee must have high ethical standards and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
      • Be highly motivated with strong organizational skills, technology skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks are vital.  
      • Integrity and honesty in conveying program information and respect for prospective students are essential.
      • Strong communication skills and organizational ability.  
    • Transportation: Dependable transportation and a valid driver’s license are required. Must be willing to travel.  
  • Preferred: 
    • Master’s degree 
    • Collegiate baseball coaching and playing experience 
    • Previous recruiting experience
