Dr. Jacob Buchanan will discuss models of more sustainable agriculture during a Friday Colloquium presentation.

Research at the nature preserve explored

Dr. Jacob Buchanan, M’Della Moon endowed chair in botany and environmental science, at Bluffton University, will present the Colloquium, “Feeding People and Wildlife: Establishing a Food Forest with Native Plants” at 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, in Centennial Hall’s Stutzman Lecture Hall.

During the presentation, Dr. Buchanan will talk about the native food garden he installed with students this spring and summer. The focus will be on agroforestry, biologically integrated farm systems (BIFS), and permaculture as models of a more sustainable agriculture. The presentation will also touch on the history of the garden's location, the process of crop breeding and domestication, issues with conventional agriculture and the benefits of native plants.

This event is free and open to the public.
