Dr. Jonathan Andreas

Dr. Jonathan Andreas will explore a new theory connecting social hierarchy to altruistic impulses.

Friday Colloquium presentation

Dr. Jonathan Andreas, Howard Raid professor of economics at Bluffton University, will present the Colloquium, “Benevolence, Bias and Hierarchy: Why the Human Capacity for both Altruism and Racism Were Produced by Hierarchy’” at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, in Centennial Hall’s Stutzman Lecture Hall.

“Human nature has an altruistic side: we possess an inborn impulse to sacrifice for the benefit of others,” said Andreas. “Biologists have proposed various theories for how this trait evolved, and this lecture will present a new theory suggesting that social hierarchy could produce altruistic impulses.”

This event is free and open to the public.
