The Cathedral of Pisa, Italy
(begun 1063)

Index

Wide angle view Facade

Although Romanesque art began in France, it spread throughout most of western Europe with regional variations. Round Romanesque arches are used ornamentally at Pisa. Note too the small windows.

Nave Nave wall

Round arches form so-called "blind" arcades along the nave exterior. Note again how small the windows are.

The famous leaning tower The famous "leaning tower of Pisa" is a Romanesque building. The arcaded galleries repeat motifs that appear elsewhere on the cathedral, especially its facade.
