"Norman" Architecture

Index

Durham Cathedral
England, 1093-1133

Once the Normans had conquered England, they brought not only their language, French, but the then-new Romanesque architectural style -- called in England, "Norman" architecture. Note the heaviness of this style. Piers alternate with gigantic columns, embellished with designs, as the support structure for the stone ceiling. Windows are still small, admitting little light.
