This experience is designed with the music lover in mind. Members of Bluffton University Brass Society will make up a large portion of the group and will be performing joint concerts with brass bands and/or a Welsh male chorus in Cardiff and Lewes, as well as giving their own concerts at Salisbury Cathedral and in London. In addition to visiting castles, museums, Stonehenge and Hastings Battlefield, we will also hear the London Symphony Orchestra. Housing will include home-stays with members of the Lewes brass band, youth hostels and a hotel. Besides seeing and learning about the histories of these two countries, we will be studying the social history such as the role of coal mines, mining and the industrial revolution in Welsh culture in general and in the development of UK Brass Bands in particular, the impact of heavy immigration and the experiences of immigrants in Cardiff and London, and hopefully a visit to a tru Manor where we may meet up with the Lord of the Manor himself! Side trips will include The Big Pit Coal Mine in Blaenoven, the Roman Baths in Bath and Swansea. Time spent as a group and “free time” will be balance so students get the most of their visit.
