Transylvania 3, Bluffton 1
Beavers play well in 3-1 loss at Transylvania
Sept. 15, 2007
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Bluffton University women's soccer team (1-3, 0-1 HCAC) took an early 1-0 lead in the third minute and made it hold up for much of the match before Transylvania capitalized three times in the final 24 minutes of the game to improve to 4-2 on the season with a 3-1 victory over the Beavers.
Less than three minutes into the contest, standout freshman forward Nicole Frey (Wauseon/Wauseon) buried a shot from the left hash to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead over 2006 HCAC champion Transylvania. The two squads battled through the remainder of a defensive-minded first half without finding the back of the net as Bluffton took its one-goal advantage to the break.
Transylvania picked up its pace in the second half, forcing a pair of corner kicks before Erin Rush took a slick pass from Whitney Price and knotted the game at one with just over 23 minutes to play. The Pioneers wasted little time taking their first lead of the game as Katie Deely knocked in a score to make the score 2-1 in minute 70.
Kate McElway took advantage of her penalty kick with 8:36 to play as Transylvania held off the Beavers in the final minutes for a 3-1 win over the visitors from Bluffton.
The Pioneers took 20 shots, 10 on goal, while limiting the Beavers to only three shots for the contest. For the match, Transylvania forced 13 corner kicks compared to two for Bluffton. Sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Williams (Toledo/Bowsher) collected seven saves and Frey led Bluffton with two shots, including her second goal of the season.
The Beavers jump right back into action when they travel to Shawnee State on Monday, Sept. 17, 2007. The match is slated to start at 4 p.m.
