Women’s basketball defeated twice on the week

The Bluffton University women’s basketball team (4-19, 1-11 HCAC) lost two Heartland Conference games last week. The Beavers traveled to Mount St. Joseph on Feb. 9 as Bluffton lost the contest 85-52. On Feb. 12 the Beavers took on Anderson University for their final home game of the season; as the Ravens took the win 67-58. Bluffton will travel to HCAC opponents Defiance College on Feb. 16 (7:30 p.m. start time) and round out the regular season on Feb. 19 as they travel to Manchester College (3 p.m. tip off).
Bluffton University 52, Mount St. Joseph 85
The Bluffton University women’s basketball team (4-18, 1-10 HCAC) was defeated 85-52 by Mount St. Joseph (12-10, 6-5 HCAC) on Feb. 9
Freshman Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding/Paulding) led Bluffton with 12 points on the night. Freshman Angie Lee (Mt. Blanchard/Vanlue) posted 11 points to tie her career-high and end the double figure scoring for the Beavers. Freshman Lindsay Bush (Howard/East Knox) threw in nine points and a team high six rebounds.
Bluffton played hard in the first period as the game was actually tied 15-15 with eleven and a half minutes left before halftime. The 15-15 tie was the fifth time that the contest had been tied in the first half alone. After the eleven minute mark, the Lions began to dominate in the game as they went on a 14-2 run to take the lead 29-17. Mount St. Joseph led the contest 51-30 at halftime.
The game did not get much better for Bluffton in the second half as they shot only 26 percent (7-of-21) to the Mount’s 38 percent (15-of-29). Bluffton committed 14 of their 25 turnovers in the second period alone. Mount St. Joseph converted 24 points off of Beaver turnovers in the contest. The final outcome would be Mount St. Joseph 85, Bluffton 52.
The Lions pulled down 47 boards to Bluffton’s 36 rebounds in the game. For the contest Mount St. Joseph shot 46 percent (35-of-75) to Bluffton’s 34 percent (19-of-55).
Bluffton University 58, Anderson University 67
BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Bluffton University women’s basketball team (4-19, 1-11 HCAC) was defeated 67-58 by Anderson University (4-19, 4-8 HCAC) on Feb 12.
Leading the Beavers on the afternoon was freshman Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding/Paulding) with 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals. Sophomore Tanya Rickenberg (Paulding/Paulding) posted 11 points and three rebounds. Senior Cara Young (Middletown/Madison) pulled down a team high seven boards.
Bluffton came out strong as they led the game by as many as eight points in the first half. The Ravens propelled themselves back into the game as they hit a three pointer to tie the game at 31 all heading into halftime. The Beavers started the second period by making key shots to lead by one point (40-39) at the fourteen minute mark. Anderson then went on a 16-8 run to take control of the game and lead, 57-48. Shots by both Stallkamp and Rickenberg trimmed the Ravens lead to five points (57-52) with seven minutes left to play. Rebounds by Anderson and missed shots by Bluffton allowed AU to control the remainder of the game as the Ravens won the contest 58-67.
Bluffton committed 13 turnovers for the game as the Ravens gave the ball away 16 times. Bluffton shot 36 percent (20-of-55) to Anderson’s 44 percent (22-of-44). Anderson led in rebounding with 48 boards compared to Bluffton’s 34 rebounds.

Bluffton currently leads the Heartland Conference in blocked shots (110 total) with a 4.78 per game average. The team ranks second in offensive rebounds with 346 total (15.04 per game) and fourth in defensive rebounds with 554 total boards. The Beavers hold the fifth place spots in the HCAC in both assists (291 total) and steals (190 total).
Individual statistical leaders
Ashleigh Stallkamp leads Bluffton in scoring with 325 total points (14.1 points per game) and ranks eighth in the HCAC. Stallkamp also leads the team in steals with 50 (fifth in HCAC) and rebounds with 135 (13th in HCAC). Tanya Rickenberg averages 11.6 points per game (255 total points) to rank second on the team and 15th in the conference. Rickenberg leads the team in assists with 52 (13th in HCAC) and in free throw percentage with a .680 average (10th in HCAC). Karin Schaller leads Bluffton and the Heartland Conference in blocked shots with 63 and ranks eighth in NCAA Division III. Schaller ranks second on the team in rebounds with 125 on the year (15th in HCAC).
