Beavers drop to Hanover and pick up scrappy HCAC win against Manchester

The Bluffton University women’s basketball team (4-9, 1-1 HCAC) picked up a win and a loss last week. The Beavers were defeated on the road by Hanover 70-45 on Jan. 8 and defeated Manchester 59-56 at home on Jan. 10. Bluffton will host Franklin College on Jan. 12 (7:30 p.m. tip off) and will travel to Transylvania University on Jan. 15 for a 3 p.m. start.
Hanover College 70, Bluffton University 45
The Bluffton University women’s basketball team (3-9, 0-1 HCAC) was defeated by Hanover College (8-5, 1-1 HCAC) 70-45 on Jan. 8.
Sophomore Tanya Rickenberg (Paulding/Paulding) was the only Beaver in double figures with 14 points. Junior Karin Schaller (Jenera/Arlington) posted seven points and four blocks. Freshman Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding/Paulding) led the team with nine rebounds.
The Beavers struggled as they committed 26 turnovers in the contest to the Panther’s 11. Bluffton shot 35 percent (19-of-55) from the floor compared to Hanover’s 38 percent (29-of-77). Hanover led the battle of the boards as they grabbed down 42 rebounds to Bluffton’s 40.
Bluffton University 59, Manchester College 56
The Bluffton University women’s basketball team (4-9, 1-1 HCAC) defeated Manchester College 59-56 on Jan. 10.
Coming out of the gate strong, Bluffton led until the 13 minute mark of the first half when the score was tied eight all, but tough defense propelled the Beavers to a 32-31 half time lead. Key buckets in the second half helped Bluffton hold the lead until the 6 minute mark when Manchester went ahead 51-50. Missed opportunities by the Spartans and clutch free throws by Tanya Rickenberg and Ashleigh Stallkamp kept Manchester at bay for the remainder of the game as the Beavers took the contest 59-56. Connecting on 23-of-57 buckets on the evening Bluffton shot 40 percent from the floor compared to Manchester’s 34 percent (22-of-63).
Leading Bluffton was freshman Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding/Paulding). Stallkmap posted 19 points, three rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Tanya Rickenberg (Paulding/Paulding) rounded out double figure scoring for the Beavers with 15 points, while adding three rebounds and three assists. A trio of Beavers Karin Schaller (Jenera/Arlington), Amanda Bell (Napoleon/Liberty Center) and Cara Young (Middletown/Madison) each pulled down a team-high five rebounds.

The Beavers ranks second in the Heartland Conference in field goal percentage defense as they hold opponents to a .376 shooting percentage. The team ranks first in offensive rebounds (222) and third in defensive rebounds (325) in the conference. The team leads the league in blocked shots (65) and ranks fourth in steals with 125 for the season.
Individual statistics
Ashleigh Stallkamp leads the Beavers with a 12.5 points per game average (163 points) which places her at 10th in the HCAC. Stallkamp also leads the squad with 28 steals (eighth HCAC). Tanya Rickenberg is second on the team in scoring with 10.8 points per game average (14th HCAC) and leads the team with 30 assists which places her at 11th in the league. Lindsay Bush posts a team-high 78 rebounds with Karin Schaller following close behind with 77 boards. Bush ranks 11th in the conference in rebounding with Schaller placing 13th respectively. Schaller leads Bluffton with 39 blocked shots which places her at first in the conference.
