On Sept. 10 the Bluffton University and Oberlin College volleyball teams will face off in Founder’s Hall in a Dig for the Cure match. The Dig for the Cure campaign is designed to help raise awareness and money for breast cancer research.
Every defensive dig by a player in this match will raise money in support of breast cancer research through the Susan G. Komen Foundation. You are invited to participate by donating to the cause. You can choose to make a flat donation or choose to donate per dig for both teams combined. To give you an idea of how many digs that might be: last year Bluffton averaged 16.5 digs per game and Oberlin averaged 21.5 digs per game (remember volleyball is the best 3 games out of 5.) Based on those averages, if the match would go four games there would be 152 digs total for the match. Thus a $1 per dig donation would end up being approximately $152 or a .10 per dig would be $15.20 for the match.
Dig for the Cure began in the fall of 2003 when Lisa Martson, the head coach at the University of Charlotte, (whose mother is a breast cancer survivor) sought to combine her volleyball program’s community service project with a company that helped her mother and others like her to survive - the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Coach Marson established the Dig for the Cure with just her program. In the following years schools in her conference also participated in the program. Consequently, word got out and the effort has grown from her sole Division I program in 2003 to more than 90 programs across the country in all divisions and high schools.
