Freshman Sarah Betts was named HCAC player-of-the-week on April 14, 2003

Bluffton College freshman pitcher Sarah Betts (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan H.S.) has been named the softball player-of-the-week in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference for her efforts in a pair of double-headers over the weekend.

On Friday Betts allowed just four hits and one unearned run and struck out six batters in leading Bluffton to a 7-1 win over The College of Mount St. Joseph, which was the Mount’s first league loss of the season. At the plate in that game Betts added a 1-for-2 performance with an RBI.

On Saturday against HCAC-leader Transylvania University Betts turned in another impressive performance as she took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before seeing the TU rally for a 3-1 victory. In that game she struck out 12 batters and allowed just three hits, and at one point retired 19 consecutive hitters. In the second game of the double-header, Betts came on in relief to strikeout two more batters to bring her weekend total up to 20 strikeouts and just seven hits allowed in 14.2 innings pitched.

Betts is now 6-7 on the season with a 2.38 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 88.1 innings pitched. Bluffton is 9-17 overall and 3-7 in the HCAC. The Beavers will host Defiance College Wednesday in a double-header beginning at 3:30 p.m.

At Bryan H.S., Betts set 13 school records and was named team MVP, first-team Northwest Ohio Athletic League and honorable mention District 7.
