three named All-HCAC

Wood, Kurtz, Payne named All-Heartland Conference

May 9, 2001

Three Bluffton College softball players have been named All-Heartland Conference by the HCAC coaches following the conclusion of the 2001 season last weekend. Senior third baseman Bree Wood (Wauseon), junior pitcher Emily Kurtz (Wooster/Smithville) and freshman catcher Amanda Payne (Tiffin/Mohawk) all helped lead BC to a 19-19 overall record and a 7-5 mark in the HCAC, which tied for second place in the league.

Wood batted .400 in HCAC games this spring, which led the team and ranked sixth in the conference. In her four years at Bluffton, she played in 127 games and collected 372 at bats, both new BC records, and her 91 career hits ranks tenth. Wood was also an All-HCAC selection last season.

Kurtz won a BC record 13 games this season and her 142 innings pitched are also a new school record. This season Emily was 13-7 with a 1.28 ERA, which is a new BC single-season record, thus lowering her career ERA to 1.98, which is already the best in the 17 years of Bluffton fastpitch softball. After three years as a starting pitcher for Bluffton, Kurtz ranks near the top of almost every pitching category.

Payne started all 12 HCAC games for BC behind the plate and posted a .375 batting average, second best on the team and ranked eighth in the conference.
