BC has good showing at HCAC championship

Displaying some of their best tennis of the season and in recent years, the Bluffton College men’s tennis squad finished fifth at the fifth at the Heartland Conference championship held April 20-21 at the College of Mount St. Joseph.

“If this group of underclassmen stays together in the next couple of years, they could be very good,” said Head Coach Kevin Brintnell. “We graduate no seniors and we have only one junior.” Bluffton finished just 14 points from the league’s fourth spot and defeated Defiance and Mount St. Joseph in the team standings.

Four of BC’s six singles players finished in fifth place or higher, led by freshman Owen Beck who finished fifth at #1 singles and received All-Heartland Conference honors. Freshman Dan Wott finished fourth at #2 singles and sophomore Garrett Skare finished third at #5 singles. Junior Genti Basha took fifth place at #6 singles and teamed up with Skare to finish fourth at #3 doubles.

Owen Beck won over Raike (DC) placing him 5th in #1 Singles
Beck was also named to the Men's Tennis All-HCAC team.

#2 Singles:
Dan Wott lost to Harwood (FC), 5-2/6-3
Dan Wott won over Wehrum (MSJ), 6-3/6-1
Wott won over Jenson (DC) to grab 4th in #2 Singles.

#3 Singles:
Dave Barnes lost to Merrick (FC), 6-3/1-6/6-1
Barnes lost to Beck (MC), 6-3/6-4 finishing 7th.

#4 Singles:
Derek Stemen lost to Heiden (MC), 6-2/6-1
Stemen lost to Goddard (FC), 6-1/6-1 placing 6th

Garrett Skare won over Coatley (DC) by default
Skare lost to Hostetler (AU), 6-0/6-1
Skare won over Buck (FC) to grab a 3rd place win in #5 Singles.

Genti Basha won by default against DC
Basha lost to Plunkett (AU), 6-0/6-2
Bash lost to Jewell (MC) for 5th.

Garrett Skare and Dan Wott lost to Halgarth and Harwood (FC), 5-3/6-7
