Tennis team drops close match to Capital

BLUFFTON, OHIO – The Bluffton College men’s tennis team (1-1) were defeated by Capital University in their home opener on Saturday afternoon.  The match came down to the wire with Bluffton falling by the final score of 4-5.

The Beavers were able to win three of the six singles matches, but dropped two of the three doubles matches to come up short by one game. Leading the way for the Beavers was senior Kyle Sprunger (Berne, Ind./ South Adam’s) who won his singles match in shutout fashion 6-0, 6-0.  Sprunger also teamed up with fellow senior Brad Boyles (Berne, Ind./ South Adam’s) to win the #2 doubles match 8-1. Senior Dan Wott (Clyde/ Saint Mary’s) kept his #3 singles record unblemished so far this year with a 6-2, 7-5 victory, and sophomore Pete Martin (Berne, Ind./ South Adam’s) chipped in with a 6-4, 6-3 victory to round out the Bluffton scoring.

The team will be back into action on Tuesday when they host Baldwin Wallace.  The match is scheduled to start at 3 pm.

No.1 -  Caress (CU) defeated Beck (BC) 6-2, 6-1
No. 2 – Good (CU) defeated Boyles (BC) 6-2, 7-6 (7-3)
No. 3 - Wott (BC) defeated Mazak (CU) 6-2, 7-5
No. 4 - Sprunger (BC) defeated Wagner (CU) 6-0, 6-0
No. 5 - Martin (BC) defeated Jenes (CU) 6-4, 6-3
No. 6 - Williamson (UF) defeated Nussbaum (BC) 2-6, 6-1, 6-0
Doubles
No. 1 – Caress and Good (CU) defeated Beck and Wott (BC) 8-5
No. 2 - Boyles and Sprunger (BC) defeated Mazak and Wagner (CU) 8-1
No. 3 – Jones and Williamson (UF) defeated Martin and Nussbaum (BC) 8-4
