Men’s basketball splits on week, Eric Sweet has career game against Temple Baptist

   The Bluffton College men’s basketball team split this past week in games. The team traveled to Kenyon on Tuesday and played their second home game of the year against Temple Baptist on Saturday. The Beavers lost to Kenyon 75-69 and downed Temple Baptist 89-53.

 

Kenyon 75, Bluffton 69

    Bluffton took the game early in the contest but could not hold the lead over Kenyon. Late in the first half both teams found themselves tied at 22 all. Going into halftime the score was 33-25 in favor of the Lords. In the second half, Kenyon led by as many as 15 points. The Beavers battled their way back but could not shake the lead to lose by six in the end for the final score.

    Junior Bryce Beilharz (Bluffton/Cory-Rawson) had a career high night with 12 points and led the Beavers in assists with 3. Sophomore Scott Bergman (Elmore/Elmore) led the team in scoring with 15 points and grabbed a team high five rebounds. Senior Brad Boyles (Berne, Ind./South Adams) threw in 11 points to end the double digit scoring. Sophomore Brett Mitchell (Avon Lake/Avon Lake) posted a career high nine points and had two steals for the contest.

    Bluffton went 27-for-63 for 43 percent on the night, compared to Kenyon’s 49 percent. The Beavers posted 40 rebounds with the Lords grabbing 30.

 

Bluffton 89, Temple Baptist 53
    The Beavers shot 55 percent for the game compared to the Rams 30 percent. Bluffton doubled Temple Baptist on the boards with 50 rebounds compared to their 23. From the free-throw line Bluffton went 8-of-14, with the Rams shooting 6-of-17. The Beavers had several season highs as a team with 89 in points, 50 rebounds, 33 assists and 7 three pointers.

    Leading Bluffton on the contest was sophomore Eric Sweet (Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf) with 18 points and 11 rebounds for a career high in both and his first double-double. Sophomore Scott Bergman (Elmore/Woodmore) and freshman Michael Anthony (Ohio City/Delphos St. Johns) both posted 16 points for the contest. Anthony posted a career high eight rebounds and five assists. Senior Brad Boyles (Berne, Ind./South Adams) rounded off the double digit scoring with 10 points.

    Beaver head coach Guy Neal currently has 148 career victories. Two more victories ties him with former coach Glenn Snyder for the most career men’s basketball victories with 150.

   Senior Brad Boyles is second on the team and third in the Heartland Conference in scoring with 16.7 points per game this season and leads the team and conference with a .731 field goal percentage. Scott Bergman ranks second in the HCAC in scoring and leads the BC squad with 16.8 points per game. Bergman also ranks 9th in the HCAC in rebounding with 5.7 boards per game. Freshman Michael Anthony is third in the conference and second on the team in field goal percentage at .710 percent, averaging 10.0 points per game. Eric Sweet adds 10.3 points per game for Bluffton for 22nd in the HCAC and posts a team high 38 rebounds which ranks him at sixth in the conference. Simeon Talley leads the Beavers with 17 assists and five steals on the year.

   Bluffton has the week off for finals and will be back in action Thursday, December 18 at home vs. Marygrove. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 pm. The team will then travel to Denison on December 20 for a 3 pm game.
