
He was selected first team All Mid-Ohio Conference halfback in 1967 and 1968 and was All NAIA District 22 halfback in 1968. Twice he led the team in rushing and once was the top scorer. His 1,682 rushing yards are on the Bluffton career list. He was selected as the team’s honorary captain at the end of his senior season.
In track he was a member of the school record-setting 440 yard and mile relay teams. The mile team also established an MOC mark. At the Tri-State Relays his senior year he was a member of winning teams in the sprint medley relay, 440 yard relay, 880 yard relay and mile relay.
After leaving Bluffton he earned the master of social work degree from Wayne State University and Ph.D. in social work from the University of Pittsburgh.
Since 1987 Hewitt has been associate professor of social work at Shippensburg (Pa.) University. Previous to that he had spent more than 15 years working for the federal government both as an Army officer and as a civilian and lived and worked in Panama for 11 of those years.
Besides his duties at SU, he has taught social work principles in the community. Other activities have included leading a parent support group for parents of pre-teens and teenagers in Chambersburg, Pa., and conducting a date rape/rape violence workshop for juniors and seniors in high school.
