A four-year starting quarterback on the Bluffton football team, Hemmert helped lead the Beavers to the NAIA national playoffs in 1987 and 1988. During his four years, Hemmert started every game at quarterback—a feat which has yet to be matched.
At the time of his graduation in 1989, Hemmert held 24 school records, of which his 287 yards against Waynesburg during the 1988 season still ranks 16th all-time at Bluffton in individual game highs.
Hemmert accumulated career totals that still rank among the best in Bluffton football history, including fourth in total offense (5,614 yards), fourth in career passing yards (4,951), fourth in completions (290), fourth in completion percentage (.522), second in touchdown passes (39) and third in pass efficiency rating (141.11).
Armed with a potent passing game and a powerful running attack, of which he was also a part (663 career rushing yards), Hemmert led four of Bluffton’s most successful teams to date, tallying a career record of 32-7 for a .821 career winning percentage. During his time at Bluffton Hemmert was named team Most Valuable Player in 1987, first team NAIA District 22 in 1989 and A.C. Burckey Award winner in 1989.
After graduating from Bluffton, Hemmert played one season with the West London Aces in the European Football League, leading his team to an 11-1 record and a spot in the league playoffs. Hemmert then began a career with Bank One, where he has held positions as banking center manager, sales and service coach, and district manager. He earned a master of business administration from Ashland University in 2000.
Hemmert currently resides with his family in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He is a licensed high school football and basketball referee and has officiated seven state playoff football games. He is also involved with the Kiwanis Club, the United Way and the Arts in Dayton. He was the color analyst for several Bluffton football games on WDOH radio.
