Harold Garverick was a football linebacker and baseball catcher for Bluffton from 1958-60 after transferring from the University of Illinois. He was selected as All-League for the Mid-Ohio Conference both years in football and his second year in baseball.
Since Garverick was a transfer student, he was not able to participate in athletics for one year. During that year he assisted football head coach Ken Mast as a student coach and led the defensive scout team. While at Bluffton he was also a member of the Boom or Bust Investment Club. After graduation, Garverick continued to help scout Bluffton’s opponents for a few years.
After graduation from Bluffton with a degree in business, Garverick took a position with State Farm Insurance company, where he still works. He is currently an insurance agent based in Willoughby, Ohio. In the past Garverick hosted a Cleveland-area phonathon for Bluffton and is a regular participant and contributor at the college’s annual golf outing.
Gaverick’s numerous awards since college include “distinguished citizen of the year” from the Lake County Football Coaches Association and recognition for “outstanding contributions to sports” at Mentor High School.
He served on the Mentor School Board for eight years and received the annual “friend of education” award. He has also taught insurance classes at Lakeland Community College and for the National Association of Life Insurance.
