Walter Diehl

The late Walter Diehl was a 1937 graduate of Bluffton who graduated with a major in social science. While at Bluffton, Diehl played football, basketball, track and baseball. Also while at Bluffton he had the titles of president of student senate, most popular man and May Day chairman.

Diehl and his team in the old Northwestern Ohio Athletic Association won the 1936 and 1937 baseball championship. Coach Burcky said that hit a home run to defeat Hillsdale 1-0 at Bluffton. He had agreed not to swing at the first pitch ever, until I gave the word, he was the leadoff batter in inning six, and I gave him the word and he stung it for the business. Bluffton 1 and Hillsdale 0. Diehl was All Conference and received Honorable Mention All State in football.

Diehl did 35 years of services with the Ohio Bureau of Employment services. Along with that, he did community service in Youngstown, Ohio, and received the Outstanding Negro in Race Relations Award in 1951.
