Tyson Veidt, a graduate assistant coach under former West Virginia University (WVU) head football coach Rich Rodriguez, is entering his fourth season as Bluffton University’s head football coach. Veidt (pronounced vîte, rhymes with “white”) came to Bluffton after serving one year as defensive coordinator for Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa.
While at Saint Vincent, Veidt served as linebacker coach and worked with special teams. Prior to Saint Vincent, Veidt spent two years as a defensive graduate assistant at WVU and was a part of the 2004 and 2005 Big East Champion teams, a 2004 Gator Bowl appearance and a 2006 Sugar Bowl win. Veidt has also served in coaching roles at Indiana University and Muskingum College.
“My vision involves developing my current roster of men and adding to that roster through recruitment. My philosophy is to be fundamentally sound in the three phases of football—offense, defense and special teams—and to be disciplined on and off the field,” said Veidt.
The Beavers have improved dramatically during Coach Veidt's tenure at the helm, both on the field and in the classroom. Bluffton finished 5-5 overall and 5-3 in the Heartland Conference after winning five of its last six games in 2011, claiming a share of second place in the conference. It marked only the second time in school history that the Beavers won five games in the HCAC, the first being in 2000 when Bluffton earned a share of the conference title. Of the 24 seniors recruited by Coach Veidt four years ago, more than 60 percent posted a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better during the 2011 football season.
