BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University football team assisted with flood prevention efforts on Monday, March 9, 2009. The Beavers filled 925 bags with 18 tons of sand in an effort to keep rising waters down and damage to a minimum. More than 50 football players and coaches took part in the sandbagging process which took place on the campus of Bluffton University. It was organized by the Village of Bluffton Police Chief Rick Skilliter. He called Phill Talavinia, athletics director, and asked if any teams could help. Head Coach Tyson Veidt quickly volunteered members of the football team.
This is not the first time students have helped. In August 2007, many student athletes helped with campus and community flood clean up and sandbagging. During the late fall of 2007 and into spring 2008 Bluffton’s Habitat for Humanity student organization and athletic teams continued to assist with flood recovery efforts in Bluffton and in Ottawa. In April 2008, Students were recognized for their services as one of 10 national finalists by USA Weekend’s Make A Difference Day.
