Balanced attack the key for BC men's soccer

Already having recorded the most wins at Bluffton College since 1994 and in position to record their first season over .500 since 1993, this year's BC men's soccer team is lacking just one thing: a dominant scorer. But if you ask this year's players and Head Coach Randy Keeler, and they'd probably tell you that's just fine by them.

"I think that it shows we're working well together," said senior midfielder Jonathan Corbin, one of three players with a team-high three goals this season. Corbin is joined by sophomore Mark Stutzman and freshman Andrew Hornblower as the team leaders in goals, while Stutzman also has three assists to lead the team in points with nine.

Compare that to past years past when BC teams would regularly feature a player with over 10 goals, but have a record well below the .500 mark. "We're thinking more as a team and less as individuals," continued Corbin, and said "the attitude this year is more positive as a whole, and that's been a definite part of the balanced scoring."

In all, 12 players have registered a goal or an assist for Coach Keeler so far in 1999, 11 of which will return for action next season at BC and seven of which are just freshman. "Coach Keeler's coaching and recruiting has been a definite benefit to the team in learning to work together," Corbin pointed out, and said, "I know that has been a benefit to me in learning the game."

Now 6-8 on the season and 1-3 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, BC posted tough losses in their past two outings, dropping a 5-1 decision to Anderson last Wednesday and a falling 3-0 on Monday to Concordia. Corbin scored the BC goal in the Anderson match off an assist from Mark Stutzman.

The team will be on the road for their last three regular season matches, first on Saturday at Thiel College in Pennsylvania, then Tuesday at Taylor/Ft. Wayne and finally next Saturday at Hanover College. The HCAC Tournament will take place the first week of November.
