Beavers set for Community Day showdown with Manchester

Manchester brings new offense to face BC

Sporting a new offense last week against Wabash College, the Spartans of Manchester College made a 180 degree turn in offensive philosophy in just one week. Using a wide-open aerial attack for the first five games of the season, Manchester used a double tight end, double wing running formation against Wabash in a 23-3 loss. Last week Manchester entered their game against the HCAC-leading Little Giants having averaged over 30 pass attempts per game. The Spartans left the game, however, having attempted just seven passes, completing two and having two intercepted.

As to what offense will show up in Salzman Stadium today to take on the 4-2 Beavers, the BC defensive coaches aren't sure. Bluffton is prepared to face either, however, but it won't be until the first snap until anyone in Salzman Stadium finds out how Manchester will line up. Manchester College started out the 1999 season 2-0, but have dropped their last four games and are currently in the middle of playing the top four teams in the HCAC (Hanover, Wabash, Wilmington and Bluffton).

Coming off a 48-17 homecoming victory over Anderson University last Saturday, BC hosts the Spartans for the conclusion of the BC Community Sports Week and what the Beavers hope will be another win in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Now 1-2 in the HCAC, BC's remaining four opponents have a combined record of 12-13 as Bluffton hopes to get back on a win streak similar to the one they saw earlier in the season when BC was 3-0.

In national NCAA Division III team statistics, Bluffton is 28th in rushing offense with 212.5 yards per game, 24th in passing offense with 272.7 yards per game and eighth in total offense with 485.2 yards per game. BC quarterback Joel Parrett is ranked 5th in passing efficiency at 174.0, first in completion percentage at 71.9%, and 15th in total offense with 285.8 yards per game. Running back Tyson Goings is ranked 22nd in rushing with 122.2 yards per game and is ranked 4th in scoring with 13.7 points per game. Eric Metz is ranked 19th in receiving yards per game with 115.2.

BC head coach Carlin Carpenter has 85 career wins, just three shy of tying the all-time wins record held by Ken Mast, who won 88 games at Bluffton from 1950-1965. Joel Parrett needs just 26 passing yards to surpass Cliff Hemmert '89 for second place on the career passing yards list, and 391 yards to surpass Hemmert for second place on the career total offense list. Joel is tied with Darrin Fox '97 with 36 career touchdown passes and needs three to tie Hemmert for the career record of 39. Tyson Goings needs 111 yards to surpass Roger Gilanyi '89 on the career rushing list, while Eric Metz is tied with Andy Nowlin '91 with 138 career catches and needs 311 yards to surpass Tory Strock '97 as the career leader in receiving yardage with 2,617 yards.
