BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Bluffton University baseball team (5-20, 2-10 HCAC) was swept by longtime rival Defiance College (9-15, 6-6 HCAC) in their 2005 Heartland Conference series. The Yellow Jackets won the first game 15-1, the second game 8-4 and the finale 7-1.
Leading Bluffton offensively in the first game was senior Ryan Fiely (Greenville/Greenville) who went 2-for-3 at the plate. Senior Jason Moore (Elida/Elida) knocked out a lone double in the game for the Beaver’s only extra base hit. Junior Tony Gerig (West Unity/Hilltop) recorded the lone RBI as he hit in freshman Tony Moore (Elida/Elida) for Bluffton’s only run. Defiance won game one 15-1. Junior pitcher Randy Miller (Willard/Willard) recorded the loss to take his record to 0-4. Miller gave up 11 hits, two walks and struck out four batters in six innings.
Defiance led game two 7-0 as Bluffton scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-3. The Yellow Jackets scored one more run in the top of the seventh with Bluffton recording one more run in the bottom half of the inning for the 8-4 final. Tony Gerig went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s, one double and one run scored to lead the Beavers in the contest. Senior Brad Moore (Fredericktown/Fredericktown) went 2-for-3 with a lone triple. Jason Moore picked up the pitching loss to take his record to 2-3 on the season. Moore gave up eight hits, six walks and struck out one in the outing.
The Yellow Jackets led the series finale 7-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Beavers would not be shutout as they posted one run in their final at bat. Freshman Greg Sigg (Maumee/Maumee) recorded the RBI as he hit in freshman Taylor Iceman (Lucas/Lucas) off of a double to right centerfield. Bluffton dropped the game 7-1. Tony Moore led the team in hitting as he went 2-for-3 in the contest. Freshman Tim Kay (Alpharetta, Ga./Blessed Trinity) pitched 5.1 innings for the loss. Kay (1-3) gave up eight hits, walked one and struck out one batter.
Bluffton University will be back in action on April 19 when they travel to Ohio Northern University. First pitch for the game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
