Spring semester 2013

HFS 155-03   Adv/OR: Circuit Training (1 hour)
This class is uniquely designed to target both strength training as well as muscular endurance and is sure to be a fun and challenging experience. Participants will moved through a variety of unique stations at timed intervals performing workouts that can be modified for any fitness level. This is a great opportunity to learn how to correctly learn how to use the new equipment in the Sommer Center with proper form and function. The course will be taught by Amy Byers, sports coordinator at Bluffton Family Recreation. A class fee of $65 will be charged to each student.

HFS 155-04   Adv/OR: Walk/Jog/Run (2 hours)
This course is designed for anyone from a non-runner who wants to begin an exercise/running regimen for health and recreation to a current runner who wants to develop a systematic training schedule, learn about training methods and get hands-on coaching as they embark on their new program. The end goal of the course is to prepare you to complete the Bluffton University May Day Run. The course will be tailored to participants’ individual abilities and goals and will be comprehensive in its scope to include instruction on athlete nutrition, stretching, running form and biomechanics, cross training activities and injury prevention. The class will be taught by Jim Brandt, assistant cross country/track & field coach. A course fee of $65 will be charged to each student; the May Day race entry fee will be an additional cost to each entrant.

PHY 203 Earth Science (4 hours)
What are the bedrocks, sands, clays and soils that make up the ground we walk and build on? What forces shape, reshape and recycle these materials through time? How do these forces explain the origins of coal, natural gas and petroleum? What are the origins of the Appalachian Mountains and the landscapes of the Midwest? These are some of the questions addressed through the labs and classroom discussions of this course. This general education lab course will help you understand how geology influences many aspects of resource management, soil management, building construction decisions and many other portions of our lives.

Northern Ireland semester program
Take advantage of the Bluffton University semester-long Peace and Conflict Resolution program in Northern Ireland, a program with academic, experiential and service components. This 15-week residential program seeks to increase visiting student's understanding of the complexities of the troubles in Northern Ireland so they can use the knowledge gained to analyze and increase understanding of conflict in their own and other societies.
