FAQ

Where are periodicals located, i.e., on what floors?

The main level (3rd floor) in the Musselman Library is the place to be for periodicals:

  • Current issues for general interest magazines and newspapers, along with current issues of Mennonite and other Anabaptist and peace church tradition journals and newsletters are located in the Reading Room.
  • Older newspapers and print holdings for magazines and journals 2000-present (may vary) are shelved in the periodical stacks, behind the Research and Information Desk. See below for tips on locating Mennonite titles.
  • Print holdings for magazines and journals pre-2000 (may vary) are available on request at the Circulation Desk.
  • Microform holdings are in two locations: most of our microfilm is on request at the Circulation Desk; microfiche is housed behind the A-B classification along with New York Times microfilm (see FAQ for microforms).

Can journals, magazines or newspapers be checked out?

Yes! Single issues (except not the current issue) can be checked out for 7 days and renewed. Bound periodical volumes are used in the library. There are scanners and a copier in the computer area on the main level (3rd floor).

Where can I find Mennonite journals, magazines and newsletters?

Currently received titles are located on 3rd floor, in the Reading Room and in the periodical stacks area behind the Research and Information Desk. For help in locating older issues, please ask at the Research and Information Desk. Some Mennonite periodicals are housed on the Archives and Special Collections floor and are available on request. Note: not all Mennonite periodicals are cataloged. Ask at the Research and Information Desk for any titles of interest.

Can I search a title in the Journal Finder and find information about that title in any format - online, print, and microform?

For now, the Journal Finder (for electronic access) and Library catalog (for print and microform holdings) should be used in tandem.

When I’m searching a research database, how do I know whether Musselman Library has the article I need?

Watch for the Find It! link in many of our research databases. Click on Find It! to discover what the library has in electronic, print or microform holdings. Not finding online access? Search the title in the Journal Finder or consult with a librarian to see if there are any online options.

What are microforms? I’m confused!

Microforms are publications with reduced image reproduced on film. Microfilm is a roll of such film, and microfiche is a single sheet of film. Both forms require the use of the library’s reader/printer for reading and reproducing. The machine is located at the back of the main level (3rd floor); printing is free.
