While the Sommer Center will not yet be approved for occupancy by Homecoming, we are going to have a formal building dedication during Homecoming while we are all on campus. It is hoped that alumni and visitors will be able to enter the main lobby on that day. The Sommer Center continues to be on schedule to open for the 2012-13 basketball seasons.

Bluffton University’s Board of Trustees took formal action to recognize Ted ’41 and Jo (Conrad ’44) Sommer and their sons, Steve ’73 and Jim ’68, along with Jim’s wife Susan (Lehman ’68) Sommer, all from central Illinois, who provided the naming gift for the health and fitness education center project that is the centerpiece of Extending Our Reach—The Campaign for Bluffton.

In addition, two public spaces will be named for two couples who provided substantial financial support and volunteer leadership for "Extending Our Reach–The Campaign for Bluffton." Bluffton’s new intercollegiate basketball and volleyball court will be known as Copeland Court, in honor of Larry and Shirley Copeland of Findlay, Ohio, and the multipurpose room overlooking the court as the Reichenbach Room, recognizing Tom and Helen Reichenbach of Bethesda, Md.
