The Bluffton College men's tennis team recorded two victories and one loss last week as they opened up conference play. BC had a dominant performance against rival Defiance College on Tues. as they won 9-0. On Sat. the Beavers split two matches in Cincinnati as BC swept Mount St. Joseph 9-0 but came up a bit short in a 5-4 loss to Hanover.
Several individuals had outstanding performances this week for Bluffton. Junior Dan Wott (Fremont/Clyde H.S.) went 6-0, winning all three of his #3 singles matches and winning all three of his #1 doubles matches with junior Owen Beck (Archbold). Junior Kyle Sprunger (Berne, Ind./South Adams H.S.) went 3-0 at #4 singles and 2-1 with junior Brad Boyles (Berne, Ind./South Adams H.S.) at #2 doubles. Beck went 2-1 at #1 singles and won all three of his doubles matches with Wott.
The Beavers are now 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Bluffton will do battle in the HCAC this week as they travel to Anderson this Wed. to take on the Ravens at 4 p.m. before heading to Manchester on Sat. to play the Spartans and Franklin College beginning at noon.
April 1: BC 9, Defiance 0
Bluffton swept Defiance 9-0 in their final home match of the year.
Seniors Garret Skare (Huber Heights/Wayne H.S.) and David Barnes (Groveport/Tree of Life Christian H.S.) played in their final home matches for Bluffton and both recorded victories. Skare battled at #6 singles and prevailed (4-6, 7-5, 6-2) while Barnes won at #5 singles (6-4, 6-3).
April 5: BC 9, Mount St. Joseph 0
Bluffton dominated Mount St. Joseph 9-0 in their first match on Sat., which put them at 2-0 in the HCAC.
April 5: BC 4, Hanover 5
Bluffton almost beat Hanover in their second match of the day but fell 5-4.
Bluffton got two victories in singles play as Wott and Sprunger both won. The Beavers also recorded two victories in doubles play as Wott and Beck won at #1 doubles while Barnes and freshman Pete Martin (Berne, Ind/South Adams H.S.) won at #3 doubles.
The loss was Bluffton's first in the conference this year.
