BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference recently announced the
recipients of All-HCAC honors for the 2009 season. Three Bluffton University men's
soccer players were awarded for their play on the pitch this year. Junior Nolan Phelps (Monroe/Lemon-Monroe) was named first team All-HCAC by the coaches. Senior Robert Johnson (Columbus/Marion-Franklin) and junior goalkeeper Brian Good (Elida) were tabbed as second team selections for 2009.
Nolan Phelps, who was second team All-HCAC as a sophomore, tied for Bluffton's 2009
scoring leader in points with two goals and four assists. In addition to being a scoring
threat, he has been the backbone of the defense for the team by limiting opposing
offenses as Bluffton only allowed 36 goals. Phelps, who started all 17 games this
season, fired 11 shots while anchoring the backline for the Beavers.
Senior Robert Johnson led the Beaver offense this year with four goals, tallying eight
points and landing him in a tie with Phelps for high scoring honors. Despite only
starting three of the 16 matches he participated in, Johnson took 10 shots and scorched
the net four times, including his game-winner in the second overtime against Muskingum
College. Johnson finished his career with 26 appearances and four goals.
The final Bluffton men's soccer player to be recognized as second team All-HCAC was
Brian Good. The standout goalie started all 17 contests for the Beavers. The scrappy
goalkeeper collected 100 saves this season, putting him 12th overall in the season
saves record book. Good also has climbed up the career saves list as he is currently
sitting in seventh with a total of 232 saves in just 47 games, giving him a mark of
4.94 saves per contest.
The Bluffton University men's soccer team finished their 2009 campaign with a record
of 4-12-1 overall and 2-6 in the Heartland Conference.
