Kurtz named HCAC Player of the Week

May 1, 2000

Erin Kurtz, a senior pitcher (Wooster, OH/Smithville), has been named the Heartland Conference Player of the Week for her efforts in three games last week.

Kurtz recorded three victories last week, including two in the HCAC over Defiance and league-leader Anderson. On Monday, she pitched all ten innings in Bluffton's 3-1 victory over Defiance. She allowed just four hits, struck out 11, walked none, and was 2-4 at the plate. On Wednesday at Albion College, she went the distance in Bluffton's 8-3 non-league win and went 1-3 at the plate. Then on Thursday, Kurtz pitched a one hit shutout over HCAC front-runner Anderson, striking out 10 batters and not walking any. She added a 1-3 day at the plate.

This is the second HCAC Player of the Week award for Kurtz this season. This season she has set school records for strikeouts in a season (123), career strikeouts (355) and career wins (37). She is one win away from tying her own school record for wins in a season (12).

Kurtz is 11-4 so far this season with a 1.13 ERA. Bluffton, currently 17-13 overall and 9-5 in the HCAC, will host Heidelberg College on Tuesday in a non-league double header before beginning play in the HCAC Tournament on Friday at Franklin.

Bluffton won the 1999 HCAC Tournament Championship.
