Six athletes competing for Bluffton College this fall have been nominated for the GTE Academic All-America Team. Senior football player Jeremy Arend along with five volleyball players, including seniors Sheryl Cunningham, Dena Eichelberger and Shannon Hedrick along with junior Beth Weidus and sophomore Mandy Pequignot represent BC on ballots being voted on by college sports information directors across the country.

GTE sponsors Academic All-America Teams in just two fall sports, football and volleyball, and accepts nominations on behalf of athletes who have met high academic requirements along with being varsity contributors to their respective teams.

Senior outside linebacker Jeremy Arend, an Elementary Education major from Carey, Ohio, helped lead the BC football team to a 7-3 record this fall. A four-year starter and first-team All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference selection last season, Arend recorded 44 tackles this season, including six for losses totaling 18 yards, despite missing much of three games due to a leg injury. He also intercepted one pass and had two pass break ups as he served as a tri-captain on the 1999 squad.
